Artist Statement: "Music has tremendous power to influence people and drive change. The “Master of Protons” guitar combines the power of music with the power source that can address climate change. Coal power plants generate 2,180 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt-hour, or about 5 tons of carbon dioxide to power a one night stadium concert! The lightning patterns in the “Master of Protons” were made by shooting high energy electrons from a particle accelerator into the acrylic guitar body. When discharged, the electrons burned lightning patterns into the acrylic to create a truly “electric” guitar! The radiation symbol was created by placing a lead mask over part of the acrylic during one of the electron beam exposures. While the lightning pattern is a permanent part of the “Master of Protons,” the guitar was not made radioactive from this process. To keep the music going in a carbon-free energy world, we will need nuclear power plants to continue to provide power for all!"
